A Man Facing 60

A MESSAGE To MYSELF … in 2030 (And To YOU Too)

With Covid-19 continuing to play havoc with the world, and my inability to actually film something for YouTube more involved than my living room, I decided to talk to my future self. Who hopefully will be out of quarantine by then. Just things like reinvented hopes and dreams, and to remind myself when both of those ideas were just forming. (Meaning: Now). And there might be a message in here for you readers as well.

You were brave once. And yes, I mean that. That decision to completely reinvent yourself? It took hutzpah. And look how it turned out! One of the best decisions you’ve ever made. And as I’m writing this time capsule, that life is still well underway, and I’m very proud of you. And I can’t imagine if you’ve reinvented yourself again (and again and again). I hope so. I hope you have continued to evolve. And I want you to remember why. What brought me here and you there. The desire to explore and expand, regardless of how others told you that you shouldn’t “at your age”.

You were healthy once too. Fit as a fiddle, as they say. I sincerely hope that you’ve continued that. If not, then listen up … you need to take care of yourself. Physically and mentally. If I’m starting to feel the years now at the ripe old age of 58, then you’re probably living with a Morning Motrin. Unless, of course, the Sci-Fi writers have had their way and you’ve been sucked into a computer and no one has bodies anymore. And even in that case, just remember that your emotions and mental well-being need some loving care as well. And by that, I mean to remember that you are allowed to love yourself. To care for yourself. I’m not sure if you still have airplanes and those annoying safety briefings in your time, but remember to always put your own mask on first so you can help others.

Speaking of, remember all that volunteering you did when you were my age? Keep that s*** up! People need people, and if not you, then who? Hell, I’m preaching to the choir here. You’ve always helped when you could, I doubt that will have changed. But still, a friendly reminder won’t help. And no, I’M NOT NAGGING! I’m reminding. 🙂

OK future Rick, there is so much more I’d like to say, but I’m sure you’ve probably already got this. Unless you somehow wound up in prison. That wasn’t on the list of adventures to try, by the way. So give me a minute. I’m going to speak to the other folks who have been witnessing this message. I have some future words for them too.

Hi everyone else. I have no idea if my future self is on a path I would approve of right now (not to be a Judgey-McJudge-Face), but I can speak to the now me. And to the now you. When you’re “middle aged” and a bit beyond, there are choices. Our major responsibilities have lessened as far as our adult kids. Our careers are probably stable and there are fewer rungs to climb. So isn’t now the perfect time? Most folks take that to mean travel, but I mean life. Stay at home and learn a musical instrument. That would be a step in mastering the second half. Or get a grip on something that has been elusive. You don’t have to climb a mountain to live life to the fullest. But climbing mountains are fun too. Just sayin’.

Here’s what I hope for you. Future you and current you. I hope you’re happy. I hope you have love in your life. I hope you wake up every day with possibilities. And I hope that you never stop looking for those opportunities. That you never stagnate. There will be time enough for that in our 80s and 90s. So for now, I wish you a great life, whatever that is for you.

OK, back to Future Rick. Hi, still there? I’m curious, is time travel a thing yet? If so, could you come get me and we’ll visit the 20-year-old Rick together? There are some things I’d like to talk to him about.
